When you are in the mood for a beach holiday, unforgettable getaways await in Cornwall. Home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK, with golden sands, rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters, secluded coves, and amazing waves for surfing, Cornwall is a must-visit, home to over 300 beaches. How will you narrow down your destination, considering all the seaside escapes Cornwall has to offer? Here, we offer suggestions, with a guide to gorgeous coastal vacation spots, so that you can pick the perfect spot for your next holiday.
Five Best Coastal Holiday Spots
Nanjizal Beach: If you are browsing romantic Cornwall destinations, this is one that will make you stop and catch your breath. Stunningly beautiful, this secluded cove near Land’s End is tucked away, only accessible by foot from a coastal path, but well worth the effort. Beautiful white sand, jaw-dropping rock formations, and crystal clear waters make this the perfect tranquil escape for relaxing on the beach, swimming, or exploring the dramatic cliffs. Nanjizal is home to the remarkable sea cave called ‘Song of the Sea’, which you have probably seen on Instagram. This tall rock archway features a lagoon of emerald water, and two natural pools that can be a beautiful spot to swim, as long as the weather is calm. In the afternoon, the cave is flooded with magical light, through the arch, making it even more beautiful. As if all of that is not enough to recommend it, this is also a great place to spot wildlife, whether you are interested in seabirds or seals.
- Kynance Cove: If this gorgeous cove on the Lizard Peninsula seems familiar, it may be that you have seen it on the fantasy series ‘House of the Dragon’, where it stars as the battleground site on the Stepstones. Even if you have never seen the show, this is one of Cornwall’s most iconic locations, with white sand, turquoise water, rugged rock formations, and dark red and green serpentinite rock. Take the South West Coast Path to admire Kynance from above, or explore its hidden caves, relax on the beach, or take a dip in the sea, as long as it is low tide. At half-tide, you will hear the snorting sound of the Devil’s bellows, a blowhole on Asparagus Island, and there is another blowhole called the Post Office, because there is so much suction you can post a letter down the hole. This beach is stunningly beautiful, and because it is a National Trust property, there is a café and car park nearby.
- Fistral Beach: Of all the beaches in Newquay, this one is the most renowned for surfing. Beginners and professionals alike can find the perfect wave off this gem of a beach on the coast of North Cornwall, and the vibrant surfing culture is friendly and fun even if you are not a surfer. Sunbathers will love relaxing on the pristine beach, families will enjoy building sandcastles and swimming, and there are plenty of restaurants, cafés, and surf schools to make your visit both convenient and unforgettable. Whether you are looking for an adrenaline rush or a peaceful holiday, you can find it at Fistral, and dogs are welcome all year long, so you can feel free to bring your furry family members.
- Hemmick Beach: If you are looking for a quiet spot near St Austell, this hidden gem on the Roseland Peninsula is the perfect place for a peaceful escape. This tranquil, secluded bay has a lovely sandy beach surrounded by dramatic rocky headlands and rolling pasture. There are minimal facilities, and the nearest parking is a short walk away, which is one reason that this little cove is still considered a secret beach and is largely unspoilt. Wild and untamed, it features not only golden sands but also rock pools that teem with life at low tide. If peace and quiet is your goal, Hemmick Beach may be your perfect oasis.
- Carbis Bay Beach: This pristine beach in St Ives is regularly voted one of the most beautiful beaches in Cornwall, and with good reason. Its soft white sands and brilliant turquoise waters hold up against any tropical paradise, and Carbis Bay Beach offers a wealth of possibilities for a memorable holiday. Sunbathers will enjoy the pristine sands, families can picnic or build sandcastles, and the calm waters are perfect for swimming or trying your hand at water sports. Situated near the popular harbour town of St Ives, with scenic cliffs providing a stunning backdrop, this may just be the perfect place to experience the ultimate Cornwall beach experience.
A Bonus Beach to Discover
We would be remiss if we did not mention Readymoney Cove Beach, near Fowey! This charming little beach, in a sheltered cove, is close to the mouth of the River Fowey and sheltered by cliffs. The views are delightful, looking out across the Fowey Estuary to Polruan Hill, or in the other direction up to the ruins of St Catherine’s Castle, an English Heritage property that dates back to the 16th century. No boats are allowed in this secluded cove, making it a great place for families who want to swim, there are rock pools to explore, and dogs are welcomed almost all year, with the exception of July 1st through August 31st, when a seasonal dog ban goes into place.
