The Old Quay House Hotel in Fowey, “One of the best ever”.

Over the past 18 months COVID has made overseas travel extremely difficult so my wife Margaret and I once again returned to Cornwall after touring the north of the county last summer. This time we wanted to base ourselves in the south and looked for a suitable hotel that offered a high standard of comfort, facilities and cuisine.

Which is why we booked The Old Quay House Hotel & Restaurant (OQH) in Fowey after searching through numerous hotels in the area. Very often you can find a hotel website and then be disappointed to find the photos and description are not of the same standard when you arrive but at the OQH you find yourself staying in exactly the type of room your were expecting from their excellent website.

The standard of the clean modern design and facilities in the room can only be described as outstanding. The restaurant which includes an outside patio area overlooking the magnificent harbour offered a very high level of cuisine and although it was a small selected menu. Each dish (right through our 10 day stay) would have had the approval of leading culinary critics.

When it came to the hotel staff the level of service was again excellent as nothing was ever too much trouble for anyone from reception, the dining room or the room management teams. In fact guests are encouraged to ask if there is anything they would like or need during their stay.

Obviously in real life nothing is ever completely perfect and our stay did present a couple of ‘challenges’. None more so than driving through the very narrow one-way streets of Fowey to check in at OQH which offers a unique experience of ‘edging’ slowly round sloping bends full of tourists (many with dogs) to park outside the hotel to swiftly check in, deposit your luggage and pick up your ‘free’ parking permit for the Old Station Yard Car Park at the bottom of the hill (a 10 minute walk away).

Also because of the historic design of the hotel building there is no lift meaning luggage has to be carried up to your room. However staff members are always on hand to help with this task.

Taking everything consideration our relaxing stay at The Old Quay House Hotel & Restaurant was an extremely pleasant experience and I would recommend anyone looking for a touch of elegant hotel comfort (at an appropriate competitive price) and luxury with gourmet meals to book this hotel.

The best compliment I can give OQH is that whilst running my international business I have stayed in some of the leading small hotels in the world and would consider it to be right up there as one of the best ever.
