Cornwall is a fantastic location to watch a theatre performance or listen to live music. Whether it’s a small local amateur production, or a concert by one of the world’s biggest music stars, the county has something to offer everybody.
During the summer months, Cornwall comes alive with gigs and productions taking place all around the county. Here’s our round up of the best live music and theatre happening in Cornwall this summer.
The Tempest – Outdoor theatre at Pentillie Castle
Make the most of a balmy Cornish summer evening and enjoy a unique open-air performance of Shakespeare’s spellbinding, The Tempest. Performed by The Lord Chamberlain’s Men theatre company, the show will be set amongst the beautiful surroundings of the historic Pentillie Castle. With a selection of homemade food and drinks available from the castle’s bar, this is the perfect chance to enjoy the extra hours of sunshine.

Paloma Faith – Live in The Wyldes
Award-winning singer, Paloma Faith, is the first headline act to take to the main stage at The Wyldes in 2018. Situated near Bude, the Wyldes site is entering its second year of one-day live music events and has already become renowned as one of Cornwall’s most magical open-air venues.

Rock Oyster Festival
One of Cornwall’s favourite festivals takes place on the banks of the River Camel, near Wadebridge from the 6th to 8th July. The festival features some big-name bands and offers a range of local beers, wines, and artisan foods, including the renowned Porthilly oysters.

The second event to take place at The Wyldes this summer is the award-winning, grass roots festival, Leopallooza. This year’s event sees U.S. music sensation, Kelis, headline the stage, with performances also from the likes of Tom Grennan, Idles and Public Service Broadcasting. The festival also boasts a wide variety of comedy acts, with renowned comedians, Russell Kane and Josh Widdicombe taking to the stage.

August at the Minack Theatre
Perched high on the cliffs above the Atlantic ocean, the open air theatre near the village of Porthcurno is set in one of the most unique and beautiful locations in the world. During August the Minack is putting on a wide selection of performances including Sweeney Todd, Wolf Hall, and Much Ado About Nothing. Whether you want to lose yourself in a tale of revenge, or be thrilled in a historical drama, the Minack is a magical location for a summer performance.

Cornwall’s most famous selection of open air concerts is back with another line up of top performers from around the world.
The sessions in 2018 feature Take That star, Gary Barlow, BRIT award winner, Ben Howard, and Icelandic superstar, Björk. Set in front of the the unique biomes at the Eden Project, the Eden Sessions are an essential part of summer in Cornwall.
Kneehigh presents Ubu Karaoke
Theatre production company, Kneehigh is back at the Lost Gardens of Heligan with its Asylum this August. Inspired by Alfred Jarry’s riot-inducing masterpiece, join Kneehigh for their roof-raising sing along version of King Ubu. Featuring adaptations of some of the most iconic rock & pop anthems of all time, Kneehigh promise a rollicking riot of ridiculousness that you won’t forget.

Cornwall’s biggest surf and music festival returns this August with another star-studded line up. With music performances from indie-rock band, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and multi-platinum singer, George Ezra, this year promises to be another fantastic event. The five day festival is set over two locations: the surfing capital of Cornwall, Fistral Beach, where world class surfing and skate competitions take place, and on the cliffs overlooking Watergate Bay, where all the live music is performed.
