Every August, the usually tranquil streets of Fowey come alive for the regatta and carnival week.

This year the spectacle will take place from 18th to 24th August, and we’ve selected a few of the things you shouldn’t miss:

The carnival procession

On the Wednesday, the carnival procession will wind its way through the town, with a weird and wonderful display of costumes. You’ll also spot a lot of the town’s traders getting involved, decorating their shops and cafes, and dressing up in some truly amazing outfits.
This year the procession sets off at 7:15pm from Squires Field.

The giant pasty ceremony

Yes, you did read that correctly. The iconic giant pasty arrives by ferry from Polruan, and parades through the streets – a real hit with the younger ones.

Live music

Music is a big part of the regatta, with live performances every day. Highlights this year include Cornwall’s premier Beatles tribute act ‘Not The Beatles’ (Friday night), ska and 2-tone favourites ‘The Irregulars’ (Friday night), Queen tribute band ‘The Good Old Fashioned Lover Boys’ (Thursday night), and Celtic-folk-punk act ‘Black Friday’ (Tuesday night).

Cornwall Live journalist and music aficionado Lee Trewhela curates a host of emerging talent too – and he really knows his stuff.

Racing

Of course, the racing is at the heart of everything. The regatta is one of the UK’s best known sailing events, with a full programme of races, including the famous Troys – a class of sailing boat build only in Fowey.
