Food Fight round one – a post-match report

Last month we hosted the first round of the Great British Food Fight – a culinary battle which sees our own head chef Richard Massey go head-to-head with Tim Pile, head chef at our sister hotel The Rosevine.

The second and final leg takes place at The Rosevine on Thursday 30 March, but before then we wanted to give you a blow-by-blow account of round one.

To set the scene – each chef had to prepare two courses of a four course set menu. Diners had no idea which chef created each course, and were asked to rate each dish for presentation, flavour, ingredients and ‘wow factor’.

Appetiser one: mackerel tartare with dill, salty fingers and crispy capers

Appetiser two: poached plaice with lightly battered cauliflower, puffed wild rice and curry sauce

Main course: pork fillet with celeriac, wild garlic and apple sauce

Dessert: Thunder and lightening – clotted cream and golden syrup torte with gin and lemon sorbet

After much discussion amongst the guests, the chef behind each course was revealed:

Appetiser one: Richard Massey

Appetiser two: Tim Pile

Main course: Richard Massey

Dessert: Tim Pile

Next, the important part of the evening: the counting of the votes. After a some quick maths from restaurant manager Brandon (and a recount, just to be sure), our very own Richard Massey was announced as the winner on the night!
